Don't edit your own writing. Ask a fresh pair of eyes to it.

If you must QC your own writing, let it sit for as long as you can
(preferably days) and do something else for a while. Then go back and
check for things that a good WP spell checker might miss. You might even
try using Grammatik (or whatever Word and WordPerfect's built in grammar
checkers are called). I find these tools are really great for a laugh!
But they might also point out some awkward constructions.
