My $0.0002:

The response depends on (1) how secure you are in your position and (2) how
busy you are.

If things are going well, you're well respected by other clients, and you
have enough to keep busy, then let the developers do their own
documentation. Folks who don't see the value of our profession aren't going
to see it any more if they're forced to use us.

Let them do their own documentation, and let the users notice that it just
isn't what it used to be. See if the users are interested in instant
documentation or in usable documentation.
