A famous former TW that I know of is Jean Auel, of Clan of the Cave Bear fame. She now has an estate on the Oregon coast. ALSO: wouldn't you say that Da Vinci did a little techwriting in his day? He didn't write user documentation, though, since it was all written backwards....
