Foreigners in Toronto

A few other tips for travelling to Toronto:

- No, don't bring your gun. You won't need one if you stay
out of biker bars, and Customs will definitely give you
serious grief if you try to bring one into Canada. Here,
only the criminals are allowed to carry guns. <gdr>

- Register anything electronic and expensive with U.S.
Customs before you enter Canada. That way, you won't have
to fight with them over whether or not to pay import duty
when you go home. And BTW... Canada Customs can be really
anal about proving your laptop works and isn't really a
bomb, so make sure your batteries are charged _before_ you
reach Customs. The x-ray machines at Pearson are relatively
modern and well-shielded, so they won't damage your
computer (not much, anyways), but the magnetic wands
aren't, and can definitely wipe diskettes. You can usually
(not always) insist on having them hand-check your
diskettes if you ask nicely.

- Make sure you've got some "out of your home country"
medical insurance handy. Sure, compared to U.S. hospitals,
Canadian medical care costs only amount to your usual lunch
money, but you still need to eat while you're in Toronto.

And don't forget, buy lots of stuff when you visit! With an
exchange rate of ca. 30%, you can darn near take home your
own office tower using only petty cash. And since our
economy needs the boost... <gdr>
