"Liner notes" is a holdover from the days when music came on big black
vinyl disks, which were encased in protective envelopes, often with an
intermediary lining which contained trivia such as credits and lyrics.

It's a quaint term when referring to music CDs. It's a real stretch to
apply it to CD-ROMs.
