The Technical Communication program at Texas Tech University will offer
graduate courses by distance, on the Internet, beginning with the fall 1997
semester.

The first course to be offered is ENGL 5375, Document Design. It is the
same course as we teach onsite in our MATC (Master of Arts in Technical
Communication) program, but class will "meet" by email and on the Web.
Assignments will be due according to a fixed schedule. Class members will
need Internet access.

Students can earn 3 hours of graduate credit by successfully completing the
course.

The course will follow the semester schedule, September 2-December 17.
Students will complete some assignments out of class, as for any course. On
Thursday nights, class members will meet virtually for some synchronous
discussion.

ENGL 5375 will be taught by Dr. Patricia Goubil-Gambrell. She has taught
document design at the graduate and undergraduate levels and at workshops.
She won the Hemphill-Wells New Professor-Excellence in Teaching Award last
year.

If you are interested in the course, you can get more information about
assignments, course goals, fees, and admission at

http://english.ttu.edu/tc/dl.htm

Enrollment is limited to 15 students. Applications for the course will be
reviewed according to the criteria we use to review applicants for the MATC
degree.

We plan to offer ENGL 5373, Technical Manuals, in the spring of 1998, and
ENGL 5377, Theoretical Approaches to Technical Communication--topic of
Ethics, in the summer of 1998. You may be able to meet professional
development requirements with these courses as well as earn graduate
credit.

If graduate school is not in your plans for the future, please forward this
message to people who might be qualified and interested.
