Ben Johnson asked about usability testing and focus groups.

Ben, have you checked the User Interface Engineering web site
(www.uie.com)? I'm not sure what kinds of info they have available, but
Jared Spool and company produce a nice newsletter called Eye for Design
that deals with usability issues. UIE does consulting as well - maybe
they could lead these focus groups and provide a "disinterested
observer" viewpoint so the groups don't disintegrate into a bash session
on your current products. I've seen that happen before! (An aside: if
any of you go to the WinHelp conference in Seattle next spring, be sure
to attend any presentations by Jared Spool. They're always fun and very
informative!)

Once you've held the sessions, please let us list folks know how they
went. I'd be interested in how much difference there is between your
company's preconceived ideas for the new product and what your users say
they want.
