An anonymous poster wondered <<I believe I may have a
copyright problem and need some assistance... Our company
purchased a number of books (some are hardcopy...some are
on disc) that compile law abstracts year by year. The law
department wants me to build a database in Folio using the
information in these books verbatim. When I asked about
copyright clearance had been obtained, I was told "don't
worry about it...we paid for the books.">>

<Fe> Aren't lawyers wonderful? </Fe> The purchase of the
books is a red herring... the information on the diskettes
is more relevant, since you're talking about online use of
the information. Before consulting the lawyers, I'd do two
things: first, read the licensing agreement on the disks
(which may very well give you the permission you need);
next, contact the publisher of the information and ask them
(without identifying yourself) what their policy is on this
kind of use. In short, go right to the source to get the
necessary information. If they frown on this kind of use,
tell that to your own lawyers--in writing, with a copy to
your manager--and take any other measures to cover your ass
before you proceed... if you choose to do so.
