Ben,

There's a lot more to adding multimedia content to something than just making it livelier. Multimedia starts to propel you into the realm of cinematic technique, and real control over audience mood (and thus reaction). Multimedia needs to be planned, orchestrated, and delivered with this in mind. There's a cycle of cognitive correlation and emotional impact that has a direct effect on learning and retention.

You can stick on bits of animation, sound and video to keep the reader busy, or you can truly integrate multimedia into your product. Do you want a garage band, or a symphony?
