The *training* you go through to become an MCSE would probably be
beneficial to you as a tech writer, but the certification itself
probably would not be--unless you plan to change careers.

I recently took two MCSE courses (but I have no intention of taking the
tests for certification). There are four certificates in the MS
Certified Professional Program:

Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)
Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD)
Microsoft Certified Product Specialist (MCPS)
Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT)

The MCSE certification is the most comprehensive and the most technical.
A minimum of six exams are required. For MCSD, four exams; and for MCPS,
one exam. I don't have information on MCT.

Here are descriptions from my MS course material:

MCSE - The MCSE certification is for individuals who use Microsoft
BackOffice products to design, implement, maintain, and support
information systems.

MCSD - The MCSD certification is for application developers who design
customer solutions with Microsoft development tools and technologies.

MCPS - The MCPS certification is for professionals who support users of
the Microsoft desktop operating systems and/or Microsoft desktop
applications.

MCT - Microsoft Certified Trainers are instructionally and technically
qualified by Microsoft to deliver Microsoft Official Curriculum through
Microsoft Authorized Educations sites. MCTs are required to meet
instructional and technical requirements specific to each Microsoft
Official Curriculum course they are certified to deliver.

I have the curriculum requirements for each certification level, but my
poor little fingers are already tired and prone to mistakes. This
information is very likely available on Microsoft's website...
