Noting Directories

Howdy,

I am creating a manual which eventually will cover both an NT
and a UNIX version of our server product. My boss does not
want me to be platform specific when I note directories. Does
anyone have an elegant solution to this? Since I cannot use
slashes I have been writing it like this:

phoenix directory, reports subdirectory, config subdirectory

I welcome any suggestions.
