Here's the scoop from the meeting.

What is FrameMaker 5.5:
Release 5.5 is positioned for production to paper and online (PDF and
HTML) as a streamlined package.

What is a PDF file and how does it work:
A PDF file is good for people who want to consume information exactly as
it appears in the printed file. An Adobe PDF file can be generated from
any application you create a file in (Frame, Word, etc.). You can then
send the PDF file to anyone who has the Adobe Reader and it can be read.
You can navigate through the PDF file and make modifications to it in
the Reader. You can share and distribute your PDF file to anyone through
the World Wide Web, cdrom, and email.

FrameMaker and PDF files:
A PDF file has hyperlinks. When you create a PDF file in FrameMaker,
cross-references are automatically converted to hyperlinks. In
FrameMaker, all these things are created automatically. In an
application other than FrameMaker, you have to perform an additional
step to create them. FrameMaker supports Article Threading, which is
based on the flow of information in your FrameMaker documents. When you
view a page in the PDF file, the best view is automatically brought up
for you (size, position, etc).

New features in 5.5:
1. Ability to sort table information. It sorts by column titles. You
specify the sorting criteria. On the Table menu, click Sort.
2. Ability to take table information and copy it out to an Excel
spreadsheet.
3. Support for 17 foreign language dictionaries. Good for spell check.
It won't stop on each foreign word in a file.
4. Direct conversion to PDF from FrameMaker. You no longer have to save
the file as a postscript file first.
5. Direct conversion to HTML from FrameMaker. You can specify how
certain paragraph tags are mapped in HTML. You can store a lot of
information for saving as HTML in your References page. If you want a
header, footer, company logo, etc to appear on each HTML page, you can
specify that in your Reference page. You can specify the hierarchical
layout of HTML pages. If you want to start a new HTML page at each
specific paragraph tag (for example, 2Head), you specify it in the
Reference page.
6. Better filters for converting Microsoft Words files to FrameMaker.
Them come over much cleaner.
