Standards for warning/caution icons

Subject: Standards for warning/caution icons

My company is moving a lot of our documentation to a PC-based environment.
Currently we have black and white icons in our Warning and Caution hazard
alert messages in our paper documentation. No one seems to know if there
are ANSI or OSHA standards for Warning and Caution icons in PC and online
documentation. We know the standard colors (red for danger, orange for
warning, yellow for caution) and the necessity of using key words to
indicate the severity of the hazard, but we are having difficulty finding
out what the standard icons should look like. We would prefer NOT to use
identical symbols for warning and caution if we can avoid it.

Can anyone point me to a reference or website that discusses which symbols
are appropriate and comply with ANSI or OSHA standards? How are other
companies handling this kind of thing?

Reply on or off the list.

Thanks,
Megan
