It is more difficult as a sole proprietorship. But I remain overjoyed at the
ease with which I can find good-paying work as an independent technical writer
and instructional designer. Not all professions are condusive to this type of
freedom. I'm about to go back to school full time to pursue a doctorate in
clinical psychology. Unlike many other students, who barely exist on an
$8,000-a-year research assistantship, I know I'll be able to make at least 1/3
of what I'm making now by working occassionally. And tech writing and training
skills are so incredibly transferrable. It's a good gig.
