To STC or not to STC?

Here's something really astonishing <Fe>: I've met both
really interesting, educated, intelligent, sharing people
in STC, and I've met their evil twins too. Does this mean
that STC is composed mainly of humans? Gosh! Y'know, it
strikes me as being an awful lot like techwr-l in all these
ways. Who'd a thunk it? </Fe>

I've benefited greatly over the years from my association
with STC, but not because there's a full-time STC rep
living in my office and awaiting opportunities to serve me.
I've gained my $110/year worth by reading things that
interested me and ignoring others, providing constructive
criticism where I felt something wasn't working, seeking
out experts and useful information, attending conferences,
and networking (both by seeking out others and by helping
others who have sought me out). Like anything else, it's
not perfect, but membership repays the effort you put into
it.
