The formula that I've seen for measuring readability is as follows:

1. Pick a writing sample of 100 words.
2. Count words with three or more syllables.
3. Add the average sentence length and the number of words with three
syllables or more.
4. Multiply the sum by 0.4.
5. The result equals the reading grade level.
