Life With a Louse of A Microsoft Mouse

I've got a Microsoft "Serial Mouse Port Compatible Mouse 2.0" on my PC here at work and an identical marvel on my machine at home. I don't know how I could be so lucky, but, hey, I am.

Both mice behave identically, lapsing into periods when it takes greatly exaggerated movement to get them to respond at all. This is especially noticeable when it's time to go through the greatly anticipated start/shut down routine at the end of the day. I haven't had any trouble with the buttons (yet).

I've cleaned the one at home repeatedly, and I cleaned and finally replaced the one here at work--all to no avail.

Is it my imagination, or has Bill got me again?
