On this list, SME always means Subject Matter Expert. However there
are a few other meanings:

Small Management Element
Society of Manufacturing Engineers
Special Minister of the Eucharist
Squadron Medical Element
Surface Movement Element
System Management Entity

I found all of these using the wonderful Acronym Finder at
http://www.mtnds.com/af/

Note that the list doesn't unclude Small and Medium Enterprises
(SMEs), which is very common in the UK at least, so it is not
exhaustive. The Acronym Finder does, however, allow you to submit new
suggestions.
