To follow up on Mike Stockman's arguments, which I endorse,
I thought that was one of the fundamental approaches from
instructional design:

1. Tell them what you are going to teach them.
2. Teach them.
3. Tell that what you taught them.

(of course there's always the 4th step we can only cover with
difficulty:

4. Get them to tell you what you taught them.)
