Lorin C. Ledger asked about icons.

Get a copy of The Icon Book by William Horton. You can order it from
amazon.com among other places.

You've been consulted on name and icons already? How wonderful! Most of us
don't get a chance to provide input until it's too late, and decisions have
already been made (often poor decisions) about names and icons. As Scott
said, the product manager is usually the driving force behind getting a
product name, identity and icons, but certainly the technical communicators
should be involved in that process. Who better to help define product
terminology and information design than the ones who help the user
understand the thing?
