Darren,

Aside from screen text, it's a good idea to try and find or
produce international symbols for a user interface. At least for EU
countries, the use of symbols is encouraged. The advantage of course is
a HUGE savings in translations as well as reducing the number of
finished products you have to keep track of; as long as you explain the
symbols in your accompanying documentation, you can usually even create
your own symbol set.
