My shot (a re-write)

Server - actually two words and two things. Server being the familiar
computer box.

List - software application installed on the server which manages incoming
e-mail to a base of subscribers. Subscriber send an e-mail to a list like
TECHWR-L and that e-mail is routed out to all subscribers for that e-mail
address resident on the server. TECHWR-L being one of the more impressive
(editor's note - delete previous sentence before publication)

The "list" software application supports multiple lists or subscriber
services and typically includes other support functions such as providing
archives of e-mail subjects sent to a particular list, digesting, and other
automated delivery options.

"List" management software varies and can provide features like, listing all
subscription lists available, re-routing subscription requests to another
server or sending a welcome message to all new subscribers.

List management software is typically deployed on a server to operate
without direct human intervention.
