I haven't been following this thread closely, but it seems to me that
the easiest and most ethical way to ask your competitors for
information is to post a question to techwr-l. You might not get
direct answers, but there's certainly no shortage of industry
expertise here. As a really good alternative, try to attend your local
STC or IEEE SIG-DOC meetings and do some networking; all
kinds of informal information exchange goes on at these meetings.
