Help with True Single Source AuthoringDespite acquisitions from eHelp to Macromedia, to now Adobe, the RoboHelp product still falls short on what so many technical writers desperately need – a true single-source writing environment. While we all know way too much about the RoboHelp feud with its seceded competitor MadCap and their Flare product, we still don’t have what we need. I really need help finding some shortcuts. I'm a lone writer at a company in New York trying to figure out the best way to get things REALLY single sourced. Macros, Keyboard Shortcuts, Snippets, and Variables... Why can’t I generate a Word document right from RoboHelp? Maybe I’m doing something wrong? I don’t know about you guys, but when I generate Print Documentation, I have to painstakingly edit the file in Word to have certain “customized” perks as covered in the following sections: Numbered Captions Does anyone know some answers to the aforementioned? Maybe you know of a book or site that can help? Thanks in advance. I would have recommended ...
Author-it, but the latest release (version 5) has jumped the shark I'm afraid. Too many problems to list in detail, but after three months of working with tech support I finally gave up and reinstalled Windows before I could even launch the program and log into the database.
The functionality that sold me on Authorit -- single source, easy importing of source documents, reusable object oriented interface, nice clean kadov-free html output, SQL database, are all still there in theory, but the upgrade to the newest version, released in October, has been a total nightmare.
Support is important in a program of this level of complexity, but I get the feeling their staff are totally overwhelmed and have given up -- the final response from them about the massive database corruption resulting from the upgrade was along the lines of "it's new, what do you expect", and "don't trust your production database to this product for at least a few more releases". For a RELEASED product.
If you're brave, go ahead and try their free demo. Good luck.
