Winning New Business: Preparing Proposals 101

PHOENIX – February 24, 2008
The Society for Technical Communication Phoenix Chapter will be hosting Judith Herr as she presents on winning new business on Tuesday, March 11, 2008.

Many professional communicators are being asked to take on new responsibilities that require the ability not only to communicate effectively with targeted audiences, but also to lead multi-disciplinary teams necessary for highly complex communication and documentation projects. Communicators are fully qualified to support, provide expertise, coordinate and/or manage the preparation and submittal of formal proposals and grant applications to provide products or services in response to solicitations issued by government agencies or corporations.

Professional communicators have the right mix of skills to contribute to, write and manage winning proposals. All that’s needed is knowledge of the “language” and steps in proposal or grant preparation and submittal. This presentation provides an introduction to proposal terms and requirements as well as lessons learned when coordinating proposals virtually and interpreting government solicitation instructions. Lessons learned from 15 years of proposal work will be included.
Preparing proposals involves team formation and work scoping, drafting the proposal, managing the review process, production of the final submittal, and often preparing and then coaching key personnel for an oral presentation.

The dinner options are chicken Palo Verde with jalapeno/cilantro cream sauce and the vegetarian is southwest avocado sandwich Fresh whole avocado lightly coated with panko and topped with pepper jack cheese, green chilies, pico de gallo, lettuce and cilantro mayonnaise.

PRICING AND REGISTRATION:
The cost for dinner and program is $25 for members, $30 for nonmembers and $15 for students. The program alone is $10. An additional $5 charge will be applied for late registration or same day registration. The meal cannot be guaranteed for same-day registration. ABOUT JUDITH HERR:
Judith Herr brings 20+ years experience managing and contributing to large and small proposals and other complex technical communication projects. “Wins” for clients resulted in multi-million dollar contracts with DOE, EPA, NASA, NIH and Kaiser Permanente. After 10+ years with SAIC, a large consulting firm, she formed Well Chosen Words to provide consultative technical and business communication services to clients.

Additionally, Judith provides pro bono expertise for grant applications by selected community outreach, educational and literacy projects.

Judith’s range of experience and expertise encompasses work in information technology; management; occupational and public health; medical, biological and environmental sciences; adult education; fund-raising for nonprofit organizations; and community development. Her international experience includes living three years in Belgium, three years in Malaysia, and extended travel in Asia and Europe.
