Technical Writing Careers

I am currently researching information for a presentation that I will be giving on the topic of "Technical Writing Careers and Roles". The goal of the presentation is to explore different types of technical writing careers. If you could take the time to answer a few questions about your current or past technical writing experiences, it would be very helpful.

Note: Answer as many questions below as you wish

  1. What motivated you to be a technical writer, and why did you choose it over other possible careers?
  2. What type of technical writing do you do (i.e. job title and field of work)? Does it require a specialized educational background or work experience?
  3. What roles do you play in your organization (i.e. do you produce instruction manuals, online help, write proposals, documentation, elicit requirements etc.)?
  4. What are some of the tasks that you do on a daily basis? What is a typical working day like?
  5. What are skill sets, tools (i.e. FrameMaker), and tasks that are unique to your branch of technical writing?
  6. What advice would you give to a person who is trying to get into the field of technical writing that you are in?
  7. What are some of the pros and cons of your career?

You can post a comment to answer the questions, or contact me directly. Thanks!

How can we contact you offline?

I have been a TW for more than 15 years, and am glad to provide comments offline. (way too long to post here)

But while you wrote, "...or contact me directly," I did not see a mechanism for doing that. (When I clicked your profile, the contact tab said, "peterl is not accepting e-mails.")

thx

Hi there, I am a tech comm

Hi there,

I am a tech comm student and am interested to hear what your research reveals about technical writing careers. Do you plan to publish all or any part of your presentation on the list-serv?

As a student, I can't answer many of the questions you posted, but if you're interested, here are a few of the reasons I chose to pursue a career in tech comm:
- I love the challenge of learning new things.
- I am interested in information design and communications.
- I enjoy working as a part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Cheers,
Christie Pangman
