Establishing and Building Mutual Respect with Technical Team Members

by Eric J. Ray

As a technical writer, are you finding yourself wishing for just a bit of respect from the engineers, SMEs (Subject Matter Experts), or other technical people you work with? Are you finding that these folks seem to stonewall you on every question you have or every goal you're trying to achieve? Are they obstreperous? Difficult? Or just plain unhelpful?

Day 1

Previously a Professional Services Manager for a software company. I created alot of technical courseware, policies, and internal instruction and checklists. I really enjoyed the formatting (have an art education background) and design, so when the position of documentation specialist opened, I went for it.

All of our docs are in Word, which is very poor for large docs with graphic content. I am now looking into new software and I think I will go with Adobe FrameMaker.

Technical Writing Training or Courses

Can Anyone tell me about a professional Technical Writing Course in India or any other country.

Thanks

"Deliverables" contract for assignment

Does anyone have an example of a template used to identify and document what deliverables will be created as part of a contract? I got myself into hot water recently because I did not spell out exactly what I was going to create. I’d like to see how in-depth or formal such a document would be.

Thanks!

Sue

Technical Document Repository

A common problem with data centers is that we have different types of systems coming from different vendors and we have different operators or engineers modifying and maintaining these systems under different projects and most of the time without having a common and secure Database to keep track of all the changes and to share the information. Usually we use tools that are most commonly available at the enterprise level to create a document management system such as email servers, file shares, paper notes, voice mail, etc.

Get More Interviews With a T-Letter

by Tom Murrell

Consider this: If you want a job, what you need is an interview. I don't know of anyone who has ever submitted a resume and gotten a job offer as a result. The very best you can hope for is that you'll get that call asking you to come in for an interview. It's in the interview that you get the job, not in the resume.

So, your first objective is to land an interview. A simple tool, called a T-letter, can help you do just that. The traditional approach has you developing a standard resume and writing a cover letter to accompany it for every job situation. A T-letter is like a cover letter, except that it doesn't "cover" anything.
