I suspect that the common mantra that many tech writers espouse - that technical writing itself is a profession and that heavy subject matter domain experience is not essential to success in that profession - may be the very thing that locks them into a path where publications manager is the top of the pyramid. Tech writers who have domain knowledge can potentially transition to other management roles...
Ah, that makes sense. And I've never agreed that a good writer can write about anything, if we're talking tech writing. For a while I considered a transition to medical writing, but determined that with insufficient domain knowledge/life sciences background, I'd do a poor job of it (if anyone even agreed to hire me).
Count me in the group that says if you're writing (or editing) something, you have to know about it, or at least have sufficient domain knowledge to readily understand and learn more about it.
(But please keep the discussion civil, and don't start a flame thread, if you disagree :-).
