There does appear to be a workaround for those who must or prefer to stay
with Acrobat 3. The creation date is stored very near the beginning of the
pdf file; I have found it relatively painless to open the pdf with a hex
editor and change the date. Have only tried it on relatively small files
so far (haven't yet distilled any book length pubs this century) but it
works, takes fewer than 2 minutes and I haven't been able to find any side
effects.
