Dan Roberts makes some interesting points based on the valid premise

Let's keep in mind, though, that the $x.xx is $5.00 and the advertised
items are, according to the STC Membership Directory,

"Member-organized committees that promote communication and exchange of
ideas among STC members with similar professional interests."

Some STC SIGs are more active than others, but I have certainly received
my $5.00's worth in the exchange of ideas from the four or five that I
belong to.
