In order to post a question here, follow these 5 simple steps:

1. Apply for admission into the distinguished TECHWR-L mailing list. In
order to do this, you will need to supply the following:
a. Two forms of picture ID to Eric Ray.
b. Proof of enrollment in or graduation from a certifiable 6-year
tech writing post-graduate program,
c. Proof of STC membership (must be a 5+ year seasoned member of
STC and held at least one officer position in the last two
years).

2. Take the TECHWR-L exam. To prepare for this, memorize at least two years
worth of TECHWR-L archives (see http://www.raycomm.com/techwhirl/).
a. Be prepared to verbally summarize at least 20 topic threads
during the oral portion.
b. Write an installation, maintenance and customization guide for
Sun Solaris v1.1.2 in XML using Notepad. Make it simple.
c. Be prepared to use the following words correctly in sentences:
cite, site, sight, fane, fain, feign, vane, vain, vein, raze,
raise, rays, and Andrew Plato.

3. Purchase and install a copy of TECHWR-L-POST(R). (Normally it's $199, but
if you're a student enrolled in a certifiable tech writing program, or are a
seasoned member of STC, you can get a $10 discount off the list price.)
NOTE: In order to use this program, you must also have a copy of
TECHWR-L-READ.DLL v1.2 installed in your \windows\system\ directory.

4. If you are accepted into the mailing list, and you pass the qualification
step, you must be using FrameMaker SGML/XML v6.1, service pack 2a installed.
This is the definitive software tool for all technical writers; you will
find no argument about that fact. Reasonable substitutes include MS Word,
WordPerfect, WordStar, and Notepad.

5. Dedicate at least four hours per day to review, research and reply to
TECHWR-L messages. Be sure your messages include at least one reference to
the TECHWR-L archives, staying on topic, and methodology. Keep in mind that
TECHWR-L members enjoy blunt off-topic personal attacks rather than
ideological counterpoint, so be sure you are up-to-date with modern
name-calling conventions.

We on TECHWR-L welcome you and look forward to your valued dialog. And
remember: FrameMaker rules!
