After getting several queries about this story (which I heard in a junior
high civics class back in the early 80's), I did a little research into the
story. It turns out that it was actually two brothers in Italy who heard
it. I found a site about this story at <http://www.lostcosmonauts.com/> as
well as RealAudio files at a related site:

There was, of course, an official Soviet denial (which is included on the
first page).

Tech Comm Musing: I wonder if the Soviet's ever documented official
procedures for Western misinformation or if they relied upon oral
instruction only.
