Hello,

"In relation to the ongoing conversation about critical thinking skills
and
being able to bring information together so that you can do your job
more
effectively, the Journal of STC is perfect. The editor tries very hard
to
include a mix of theory and practice to satisfy most of the readers. I
enjoy
it because of attention to new trends in the field and because I am
interested in the research because I always want to be at the top of my
game. If you are looking for prescriptive advice on how to accomplish a
task, then look to Intercom or to some of the "How To" sites on the web
such
as John December's at www.december.com."

I'd just like to add that each quarterly STC journal also contains a
section with book reviews of reference materials of interest to
technical communicators. These detailed reviews are written by other
technical communicators with an emphasis on each book's value to those
working in the field. Sometimes that is the first section that I turn to
when I receive the Journal...

The STC may or may not be right for you, but your local chapter may
offer programs that are worth checking out. I just relocated to a city
with a fairly active chapter, and I have been looking into their free
information sessions. I call the local STC line regularly to remain
informed of upcoming topics, then choose to attend any that appeal to
me. (You can pay a fee to attend a dinner before the session, or you can
come after dinner and attend the session for free.)

So far, I have attended a session on graphic design that was quite
informative. Other topics include internationalization, and I believe
that there is a one-day conference coming up devoted to e-Learning.
