Sean Brierley is having problems with Word styles. Don't take _this message_
as authoritative, but I recall reading somewhere authoritative that you
can't rename or delete the built-in styles that come with Word. (The purpose
is undoubtedly to protect the templates that Microsoft ships with the
software, since if you deleted a style used in a template, the template
wouldn't work). So:

<<I want to rename a bunch of styles.>>

You mentioned that "List 2" is one you're trying to rename as "Numbered
Next"; you probably can't do this, but you can almost certainly create a new
style with the desired name, using the properties of the old style.

"Technical writing... requires understanding the audience, understanding
what activities the user wants to accomplish, and translating the often
idiosyncratic and unplanned design into something that appears to make
sense."--Donald Norman, The Invisible Computer
