This isn't an answer exactly, Rob, but I have experienced the same
thing with some legacy docs I inherited. The graphics were Visio
drawings. In some cases, I was able to cut the Visio drawings from the
Word doc, paste them into Visio, then save/export them as .gif or
.bmp, then copy-and-paste them back into Word. *Most of the time*
(loosely), this worked fairly well.

I'm not familiar with System Architect. Do you have access to that
program? If so, you might try the same tedious, frustrating process I
did of putting the graphics back into System Architect, then exporting
them as a different format. Not a perfect solution, but you gotta do
what you gotta do..... at least until something better comes along.

Someone explained to me that when you import or paste any graphic into
MS Word, then Word changes the format of that graphic. It was a long,
technical explanation that made sense if it's true, and it certainly
explains some of Word's quirky graphics-handling issues.
