Telecom covers A LOT; just saying "telecom" is somewhat broad.
Here are a couple of reference Web sites. When I first started in telecom,
my company sent me to some training. That was very, very helpful; plus, I
learn pretty quickly.

http://china.si.umich.edu/telecom/technical-faqs.html
http://www.pugettech.com/net101/
http://www.eocenter.com/telecomweb/default.asp

I'm in wireless and antenna-related stuff now, so I have a bunch more links
but they are very specific.
I would definitely recommend combing the Web site of the interviewing
company very closely. Maybe they have industry links. Go to
http://whatis.techtarget.com/ and look up any term from their Web site you
don't know.

As long as he is willing to learn and can learn quickly, it shouldn't really
be a problem.
