hi all, and thanks much for all the emails and support. as it happens, I found
the trouble just after posting and before anybody tipped me off, but still

It was the automatically update "feature" causing the troubles. I still say it's
not how it should work, however, but oh well.

I'm getting documents from operations, and I need to get them using the styles
and formatting in Word to avoid some of these troubles, as someone helpfully

thanks again - I should eat some humble pie, but it'll never happen when it's
about something microsoft ;)
