How can a newbie can break into the field?

Find(1) some little startup company that doesn't know anything about writers or how to hire people. You will look like a rescuer if you show up knowing anything at all about tech writing. Tell them what experienced writers make, and then say that you'll give them a discount to help them out. Don't even hint that you're charging less because you're new and have no confidence and nobody will hire you.

This will get you a line on your resume and a document for your portfolio.

(1) This requires a lot of nosing around.
