e.g. is "for example," and gives examples of a certain proposition (DON'T end it, or anything else, with "etc.")
i.e. is "that is," and clarifies a certain proposition, often by listing all components of it

Hope this helps,
Doug (Doug -dot- Grossman -at- SAS -dot- com)

What's the rules for using i.e. and e.g. ??
