I've seen it and never knew, but a
friend now asks and I've searched the
Internet and can't find anything. It is
not, apparently, a Latin abbreviation,
from what I can tell so far.

Anyone here know what it is? It is seen
chiefly in footnotes in scholarly works,
but I can find nothing about it on the
Internet, in the dictionary, or in a
Latin dictionary.
