In all probability, your problem stems from too much
flexibility working against itself. To locate the
problem, track down all the possibilities, look at
all the options.

On the Format Style db, there are two checkboxes. The one
on the right allows you to automatically update the style
anytime you make a change to a styled para in the doc. If
this isn't checked, you make a change, then apply the style
and word asks if you want to change or reapply the style.

The checkbox on the left is Add to Template. When it's
checked, any changes that you make to the style in the
document are automatically added back into the template
that's attached to the doc. If this checkbox is cleared,
changes that you make to the template only affect the
current doc.

Now, to further complicate matters, on the Tools>Templates
and Add-Ins db there's an Automatically Update Document
Styles checkbox. When this box is checked, the styles
stored in the template are automatically reapplied to the
doc each time it's opened.

So, if you're updating your style in the doc and not
specifically writing it back to the template and you
have your document set to read-in the template each
time you open it, ...

That said, word is particularly inept at maintaining
indents with bullets and numbers and you can avoid most
problems by never auto-reading-in the template.
