I'm working at home full-time as a writer/editor because of a disability
using Sun's work station on an ISDN line. Now that my company
is facing hard times, My boss is concerned about
the cost of ISDN and wants me to use my PC on a DSL line.
I asked if they would pay me something for the use of my PC
and the answer was no. I'm been a regular employee for 6 years.

I know I'm lucky to have a job and be working at home but I'm
wondering if I should push the request to be paid for use of
my PC or just be happy to donate my PC for 8 hours a day?

Bob,

Regardless of what the others are saying, this might be construed to be a liability, both to you, and to your company.

Does the use of your PC add to your liability for damage to the company, if you loose files due to equipment failure?

Are you liable for any usage of the equipment other than for company business?

Is the company liable for anything you do on your computer?

What is the company's responsibility for repair due to fair use, wear and tear on your computer? Are they liable if you experience a power supply failure, do they replace it? If your hard drive crashes, do they replace it?

Are you recompensed for use of your equipment?

About the only people who provide their own equipment are contractors who work off-site, they are recompensed for their equipment in what the company pays them. Carpenters normally provide their own tools. But, that industry doesn't have any application to what we are talking about.

What about the cost of the DSL subscription? Are you going to pay for that, or is the company?

If they do go to DSL, or ADSL, will you need to use VPN to secure your connection? Who will provide the client?

As for that, who is going to pay for the software that you will use on the computer?

Has your boss even asked the company lawyer about this?

Get some of these questions ironed out first. Your boss may really want to consider these.

On the other hand, if you are not confident that they will continue to employ you because of this, and in the end you get laid off, you may have justification to consult with your personal lawyer about discrimination because of your disability. Of course, if they are going under, you may end up beating a dead horse.

I think that asking you to provide your own PC, software, and connection, or any of these three separately or in combination, is not correct. You will have to call the shots after considering, but I don't think that they are being fair in this.

Scott
