Yes - someone posted a registry patch to prevent word from making a second
copy of the picture a few days ago - I'd post requesting that as I couldn't
find it :-(

Reading between the lines (normal mode of operation for Word, I take
it), I think this explains the weirdness I observed last week: I
inserted a small, unremarkable TIFF in a one-page letter. I might have
been able to get away with a high-res JPEG, and if you tell me that
would have made a significant difference, I'll do so in the future.

The one-page letter was turned into a mail-merged 511-page file. Despite
all the usual tricks (Save As to a new filename, principally), the
mail-merged file was approximately 45 MB in size.

When I spooled the file to the printer, the spool file was only half
that size (22 MB). First time I've ever seen a print spool smaller than
the original doc file.

1. Would using a high-res jpeg have saved substantially on the file

2. Is there any way to persuade Word to store a single copy of a graphic
and make repeated references to it--within one file (not interested in
