The above is just one small piece of the contradictory policies surrounding
computers and other office equipment. One coworker hypothesized the reason for
this is that the people in charge of computer policies rarely use computers and
base much of their decisions on the latest horror stories circulating on the
news and the feelings they have gotten from sci-fi computer stories.
Things such as:
- Data can't leave the company on portables, but can leave as paper copies.
- Laptops can have remote access, but telecommuting and home offices are not
supported.
- Directors that use computers sparingly can have remote access, employees who
need computers for their work cannot.
- All data on computers is company property because the computer is company
property, but desks and cabinets are company property and you can put whatever
you want in them.
- Personal e-mail is a waste of company resources, but mail handled through
shipping/receiving and inter company mail (and requires many more resources) is
not.
- You can put up pictures on your cubicle walls but not your computer desktop.
- Most workers will dump any data into servers in any fashion, but the company
follows strict filing and tracking procedures for hardcopy.

There are dozens more....
