How 'bout the asylum?
Seriously,
Here at SLB, we are part of a group called Information Design, which
includes Tech Pubs, Web Dev and Training. This group falls under the General
Administration arm of the RMS group of SLB. Which means that I'm about five
levels down from the President of this 15,000 employee company. How's that
for a TOE? (BTW, - that TLA means Table of Organization)
One good thing about this setup is that my supervisor's boss is pretty far
up the chain of command. In fact, he's on an equal standing with the head of
Product development. So: I raise an issue, and my supe has to take it to her
boss - by the time it gets back to developers, it's already coming down from
ten miles up (their org chart is much deeper than ours.) This means that
(generally, so far, & other additional qualifiers) I get a very high level
of cooperation.
While you may not be able to get your dept. bumped this far up the org
chart,(and everyone on the list will offer an opinion, or maybe two) I've
found this to be a terrific setup, and would suggest that the higher you can
get, the more clout you'll have in your day-to-day operations.
