The best suggestion I can give is: Don't do it there. You will find it much easier to work with your handouts if you create them via "File"->"Send to" -> "Word" instead of letting PowerPoint create them. This will give you much more flexibility, much better formatting ability, and remove the (somewhat common) problem you are currently having.

If you need more information on using Send to Word, let me know.

We're trying to print a powerpoint presentation file as
handouts, and an odd thing happens every time we send it to the
printer: only page 1 prints. We've multiple-checked the
printing setting, tried sending it to another printer, tried
printing from another computer... only page 1 prints.

since the presentation is in half an hour, we're using an old
printout... but it's driving me nuts why we can't get it to
print properly.

any suggestions?

Thanks,

Becca
