In Word 97, look in the Help file under "International characters". From the "Topics found" list, choose "Type international characters" for a list of the keyboard commands (shortcuts). For French, they are typically CTRL+ the accent required, then the character to be accented.

If the accented character you want isn't in the list, you can use Insert | Symbol from the menu bar (slow but it works) or assign your own keyboard shortcut to the character.
