I disagree with Andrew about one point: for a technical writer it is better to learn how to write correctly as a bunch of new softwares.
It is not why a documentation has been written using a good tool that it is good.
My opinion is that the most important question that a tech writer has to ask himself is: how can I guarantee that the Reader will be able to get the information he is searching for as quickly as possible? Maybe this IM seminar could help.
