We've updated the TECHWR-L Poll with a new question:

For you, which of the following best describes your view of technical writing?

* It is a stepping stone to help achieve other goals
* It is a goal or destination in itself
* I do not yet know what I consider it to be
* Other/none of the above

Why do I always want to choose "all of the above" on multiple choice questions? Blame it on early toilet training, or something.

However, since "all of the above" isn't a choice, I'd have to choose "I do not yet know what I consider it to be."

Like many people, I never planned to be a tech-writer; it just seemed an interesting job when I needed one, and everything snowballed from there.

Once I was working steadily, it seemed an end in itself - and in some senses it still is, since I would be happy enough doing nothing else (always provided that I wasn't slotted into a permanent job in which I had to oversee the 15th revision of a manual whose original I wrote).

But, at the same time, it has been a stepping stone for me. In the last three years, technical writing has only been about half my jobs or my income. The rest has often been related to tech-writing, such as writing copy, but it has also included managerial work, as well as several other categories.

Maybe when I retire I'll be able to say how I regard tech-writing. Right now, I'm too busy.
