David,

Now that's a pretty cynical campaign! It's interesting that it's working though. The only place I've ever seen wholesale pirating was overseas. Every place I've ever worked here had rigorous policies about licensing software apps. However, domestically, I have seen individual employees load personal updated versions when they could not get IT to update critical work applications. I think the "diffusion of innovation" theory applies particularly to technical users. Some need the latest versions, others wait 10 years for all the bugs to get worked out. I've also seen IT people load the latest versions on their own machines, but keep the corporate standard a few versions back, just to avoid having to "waste time" debugging hundreds of machines! ; ) It's hard to argue with that logic!

There was an article I skimmed a few weeks ago in eWeek (formerly known as

days to get their software licensing fully compliant. They investigated and
learned that the "30-day amnesty" is just a marketing ploy to get intimidate
people into purchasing software. They have no intention to follow up after
the "30-day amnesty" expires, they just want to cow as many people as
possible into buying more software.

The increase in software sales would indicate that there's quite a few
companies that use unlicensed software.
